A lesson learnt over lunch

Yesterday I went out for lunch with a bunch of my office kakis. We decided to take a bus down a few bus-stops and ventured the kopitiams further away. After lunch, we had to cross over to the other side of the the huge paya lebar road to take a bus back to Trinity@Paya Lebar. But it started pouring. We braved our way to the bus-stop in the rain and got on the bus. The rain got heavier while we were on the bus and by the time we got off the bus, we were stuck at the bus-stop (we had to cross another two-way street to our office building).

There were 6 of us, none of us had a brolly. We waited and enjoyed our usual lunchtime banter at the bus-stop. Then 2 of us saw that the rain got lighter, and decided to cross over and get brollies for the rest of us. The rest of us felt pai-seh, haha.. so we tried to cross too. When we thought the road looked clear enough, we stepped out two steps, only to retreat back to the bus-stop because the cars started coming quite quickly. Can you imagine the group of us, wearing our nice clothes and all, trying to jaywalk across a busy road, with puddles here and there, in the rain?

When we crowded ourselves back into the bus-stop, a lady approached us and said, "You are trying to cross the road is it? You need an umbrella? Here, you can take this. I took a wrong bus just now, and the bus captain gave it to me and told me to throw it away after using cos it's an old umbrella." WOW. And so, we thanked her profusely, and managed to cross the road with the huge golf umbrella that had a few holes.

That was when God taught me a lesson.

If we hadn't tried to cross the road, the lady would have just assumed that the group of us were waiting for a bus at the bus-stop. But when we took our first step out, she saw what we were trying to do and God used her to provide us with an umbrella to get us to our destination without getting wet. If we had chosen to stay under the shelter faithlessly, waiting for the rain to stop, we would've missed God's act of providence.

Faith requires us to take the first step of courage out. He who is faithful will provide all it takes for us to get us to the place He's called us to. This is also a lesson I learnt from Ps Dowdy's book "Moving On and Moving Up". And God is speaking to me and my family for this season in our lives, even through a rainy lunchtime lesson like this. :)

TGIF!!!
